Stretching 500 miles across Oregon and California, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway All American Road passes through 47 small towns and unincorporated communities, which were all in urgent need of economic development as timbering and mining declined. At the same time, the breathtaking route with over 100 Pacific Rim of Fire volcanic attractions bookended by Crater Lake National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and Lava Beds National Monument held the ability to deliver world class visitor spending.
A plan for sustainable growth revealed substantial opportunities for the communities and small businesses along the route. That plan has been coupled with a plan focused on assessing the visitor experience along the entire route to remedy road safety issues, restore and reforest viewsheds, upgrading signage, changing the route to deliver more economic development to more communities, and making the area visitor ready.
All 47 rural communities and small towns are included in the planning.
Over 1,500 small business, natural and cultural resources, and attractions have been identified.
Promotion of the newly enhanced experiences along the route have the ability to generate $299 million in visitor spending annually.
