With 79% of the county dedicated to farmland, the local economic development officer saw an opportunity to encourage visitors to explore other parts of the county beyond the Town of Shipshewana while supporting farmers and celebrating the county’s deep agricultural roots. Now a county-wide economic development initiative, the engaging experiences developed for visitors are ensuring that the farming heritage will continue to be strong for generations to come. The new offerings include:
Agricultural Heritage Trail – A curated journey incorporating more than 60 farm locations, where visitors can meet young farmers, tour working farms, and purchase fresh, locally grown products.
Historic Hoosier Homesteads and Farm Attractions – Discover 30 historic farms, each operating for over a century, and explore a fascinating collection of three barns filled with functional, historic farm equipment.
Amish Backroads Byway – a new Scenic Byway that touches on a large portion of the 375 Amish businesses in LaGrange County.
